Tips and Tricks

Here is a really cool way (scroll down for an "easy" way) to keep up with whats going on with your bird club. First of all if you don't know what "Really Simple Syndication" (RSS) is, you should find out. A quick (and potentially misleading) explanation is that it is regularly updated content that is shared out through a (typically) unrelated website or through a special RSS reader. Click on the News Aggregator link to see an example of syndicated content on this website. All those news stories get updated automatically. These stories are syndicated by other websites (typically news organizations) and we offer their stories on our site. Well we provide our own content this way too !

A good way for you to set this up is to create your own google personalized page by going to http://www.google.com/ig. You'll notice that there is already some stock syndicated content on the page even before you log in. You have to create an account with google (if you don't already have one) before you can save content (though you can probably add some just to see what is possible). Our very own website http://acbc.al.umces.edu/ has RSS feeds that you can add to this page or to a more advanced RSS Reader like Bloglines, Squeet or the Google Reader. Any place where you see the orange "XML" or "RSS" icon has a feed.

To add headlines from this website the feed URL is http://acbc.al.umces.edu/node/feed ... or to add a feed based on the websites blogs the URL is http://acbc.al.umces.edu/blog/feed . That first URL will show you the events that are coming up ! If you are familiar with RSS, this may be the easy way for you.

THE EASY WAY is to click on "my account" in the Navigator section (by your login name), your account information shows up. Then click the "my notify settings" tab. Change "Notify status" to enabled and "Notify New Content" to enabled. Then you must choose what type of content you want and whether you want to hear about "comments" when they are posted (in addition to new posts). You'll get periodic emails when new content is posted.
