Blogging

Wow ... ok ... you found my blog. Not much here yet. I'm working on making it possible for all of you to create your own soapbox. For now you can make comments on my Blog.

Blogging is one reason I decided to use "Drupal" (that and the fact that the Sys-Admin at the Appalachian Lab is wild about this Drupal stuff). Ok I'm having fun poking fun but all in all I think this was a good idea for the club web page. I feel like I have all the power to create static pages like one might with Dreamweaver or my personal favorite html editor (Notepad) and we all have this additional ability to blog and/or post to a forum. I'm just beginning to learn about this stuff but it appears to have some useful stuff. Perhaps we can use the event calendar to register for events like field trips or the banquet (I'm looking into that one).

More on blogging (and this content in general)

I have not heard back from anyone on my previous comment so I wonder if anyone has even read it. If you have comments and don't care to create your own account, just email me.
I just learned something very cool about this site that I didn't already know. Any of the different "categories" on here can be made into an RSS feed by adding "/feed" at the end of the category name.
For those of you who don't know what an RSS feed is I will try to demonstrate it for you and tell you how you can set one up. Lots of websites that update content regularly are offering these RSS feeds (RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication"). The feeds can be put on a website (see our "News Aggregator" for an example of this) or read with an RSS reader like RssReader, Bloglines, or Google Reader. I'm currently reading RSS feeds in my personalized Google home page. Your own google personalized page is available to you at http://www.google.com/ig.
Any place on this page where you see the orange XML sign is a place where you can create a feed. If you wanted to keep track of the "blog" category on this site, you could put http://acbc.al.umces.edu/blog/feed into your RSS Reader.

Content on these pages

So far it appears that I'm the only person putting content on these pages. I'm curious if folks have tried and given up or are just not particularly interested in contributing. There are about 8 or 10 registered users now which I think is good. I have a bunch of questions if anyone cares to answer them ...

1. "Do you" / "Would you like to" get content updates by email ?
2. Have you checked out the News Aggregator ?
3. Is there anything here that you'd like to use but that you are having trouble figuring out ?

You should be aware that if you have questions about using the site, you can contact me (via anonymous email) by clicking on my name as it appears at the top of these posts. I'll try and get back to you as soon as I can.

Birding Sites

Could we have a page listing birding sites and how to bird them? I am going to be starting grad school at Frostburg in January and it would be nice to have that information.

Birding Sites

Drew,

See my web page at http://www.westernmdbirding.com ... and check out the site guides for Allegany and Garrett Counties. So far there are only about 4 sites total but I'm working on some more. I'm looking forward to meeting you in person. It'll be good to have another birder around and I also hope you'll get involved in the club.

Birding Saturday

Subject to my getting out of bed at a reasonable hour, I plan to do some birding tomorrow. Probably Green Ridge (from Horse Rock Rd north along Green Ridge Rd) for a while and hit North Branch on the way back. If you're out, give me a ring on the cell. AK was cool - 19 new birds. The new website seems like a great idea. Thanks for your effort.

Birding Saturday

Cool I plan to try to get out early too. Of course you mean Pack Horse Road ... right ? I was thinking about Youghiougheny Reservoir but Green Ridge could be decent. Where's the next cold front ?

The Saturday Birding

You are correct. It's Pack Horse Road. Senility setting in. Cold fronts seem nonexistent in the forecast. A tiny one tonight but I don't know whether the birds will notice.
