MOS Conference 2007

Club News

The Maryland Ornithological Society Conference is being held in Salisbury Maryland this July 27 - 29, 2007. Here is a flyer The rooms are less expensive this year than they sometimes are being at the dorms at Salisbury State University. I know its a little bit far away for most of use Western Marylanders but I know a few folks are planning to go !

Voting Results

Club News

I received 8 votes on the issue of whether or not to pay speakers for their travel to our meetings.
Here are the results:

Issue #1.
Most of us agree that we should reimburse speakers for coming from far away places to speak for our club. We should have guidelines in place for what is appropriate re-imbursement. Note that speakers always have the option to refuse any payment. Please select one of the choices below.

0 votes - Speakers get payed nothing for speaking for our club
5 votes - Speakers coming from 100 or more miles away should be reimbursed $50.00 for travel costs.

Picnic Results

Club News

The Picnic was enjoyable. Though not very well attended, those of us who braved the threatening weather had good food and fun. The weather DID hold off while we picnicked (sp ?) outside. I received some votes on the issues that I mentioned in the newsletter. I'll tally those up and post some results.

May Count Results

Club News

The May Count was held May 13th, 2006. We had 120 or 121 species depending on whether you count the Brewster's hybrid as a species (perhaps not) and 3378 individual birds. We had 7 parties in the field and 8 individuals. We had 55 total man hours in the field. Heres the list.

Suggestion Box

Club News

As an MOS Chapter President, I have been asked to implement "Best Practices" with respect to Bird Club Activities. It appears that membership statewide is down and we in fact have a net loss of 2 members (6 leaving and 4 joining). I e-mailed Linda Keenan and got a digital copy of the letter I received. I've posted it here for folks to look at. Some of the suggestions in the letter include:

1. Offering more Field Trips to new and exciting places.
2. Having refreshments at our meetings (not sure if the Library allows this one).
3. Providing a regular newsletter.
4. Spreading news about our meetings by word of mouth.

Irish Grove Trip Report

Club News

The field trip to the Irish Grove Sanctuary had mixed success. Other than the field trip leaders Gwen Brewer and George Jett, I was the only attendee. Also the sanctuary had been winterized (contrary to what Gwen had been informed previously) so there was no running water. We decided to stay there Friday night but go elsewhere Saturday night. We participated in the Rarity Roundup on Saturday so it probably made a little more sense to stay someplace closer to Ocean City anyway. We did some night birding (by Ear) Friday night and walked part-way out Rumbly Point Road into the Marsh. There were lots of ducks (presumably all black ducks) calling and a noisy Great Blue Heron (that didn't like our flashlights), several Dunlin were calling from the marsh too. George and Gwen heard Bobwhite early Saturday morning.

Banquet Report

Club News

The banquet was a success with a nice dinner prepared by the Princess Restaurant in Frostburg and a nice presentation by David Harvey on a recent trip to Algonquin Provincial Park. After David's presentation, I look forward to visiting the park some day in the future.
