Tuesday Sept. 9th, 2008 – Monthly Meeting 7 P.M. Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center 898 State Park Rd. Swanton, MD 21561.
Jon Boone will present his talk “Roger Tory Peterson and the Artful Science of Field Guides”. Come celebrate Roger Tory Peterson as 2008 marks his 100th birthday. Jon Boone is a consultant with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York and has been working with them to acquire his artwork. Jon will discuss Peterson and the evolution of the modern field guide. The information packed into a field guide is astounding and the effective dissemination and presentation of that information is clearly both an art and a science. Bring your favorite field guides from any and all authors to the presentation to aid in the discussion, which will be (in part) an informal question and answer session.

Sunday Sept. 14th, 2008 - Annual Picnic, 1:00 PM at Carey Run Sanctuary (Finzel, MD). We thought we’d try something different this year and hold our Fall Count tally at the picnic. That will help the compiler (Chuck Hager) to get all our results (well most of us anyway). If you didn’t count, come out anyway to meet and socialize with some of your fellow bird club members. The club will provide a meat platter and some drinks. Please bring a covered dish. Annual dues are due at this time so bring your checkbook. If you know of someone who might be interested in joining the bird club, this is a good opportunity to bring them along. Contact Barbara Gaffney at (301) 895-4646 (gaffneyg [at] mindspring.com) or J.B. Churchill at (301) 697-1223 (jchurchi [at] atlanticbb.net) for more information.
